Seven Agile Insights

The origins of working in agile teams are found in systems development, but we now know that other types of operations can benefit from working in teams, especially since tasks become increasingly complex. Working in teams is essential for all types of complex tasks when multiple competencies need to collaborate.

The challenge for organisations

Most organisations I meet today are using agile and agile development teams to achieve high productivity in their operations while maintaining the capacity to adjust to changing needs. The aim is to facilitate fast and continuous delivery with high quality. The ability to form and maintain productive, agile teams is critical to such an agile approach.

Many, if not most, organisations are struggling to digitalise their business at the preferred pace. Traditionally, skills have been secured by adding individual consultants to strengthen the own organisation’s delivery capacity. For an organisation that has adapted an agile way of working, this may cause disturbance productivity loss in existing teams.

How to Accelerate the pace of digitalisation

It’s all about failing! Well, that is true to some extent… Given you have the right skills, the single most important factor for a team to become and stay high-performing is a culture where employees feel secure and dare to fail. Our experience shows that the below factors are critical to achieving this.

  • Long term commitment – a team needs time to become high performers. Four to nine months is normal.
  • Continuity – The opportunity to work together without unnecessary changes.
  • Coaching – An external coach helps the team overcome challenges and continuously improve.
  • Servant Leadership – An organisation surrounding the agile team that nurtures the team and helps it deal with various challenges.

You can focus on helping your own teams stay high performing while your supplier is responsible for the high performance of the additional team or teams – a bit of a win-win situation as I would call it.

Seven Agile Insights – when buying agile

  1. Secure volume and long-term commitment to enable team delivery.
  2. Use local or central framework agreements to minimise risk and save time.
  3. Engage in active dialogue with suppliers through supplier meetings and RFIs.
  4. Evaluate quality before price to facilitate selection of suppliers with the capacity to form and maintain high performing teams.
  5. Create conditions for the agile team to be long-term high performant by allowing a good establishment phase.
  6. Enable continuity through transferring responsibility for staffing and productivity to the supplier.
  7. Ensure tracking and monitoring that the client and supplier agree on.
