Smart City Expo Poland – cities and people
Smart cities are not only a technology superimposed on a network of public services such as the supply of electrical energy, urban transportation or control of waste and wastewater. Smart cities are, above else, an ambition to create space in which technology helps citizens make their lives better and safer.
When thinking about intelligent cities, it is easy to fall into a limiting trap of considering ‘smart’ as pertaining only to infrastructure. And yet a smart city doesn’t only mean intelligent buildings, production and trade, but also a safe, citizen-oriented habitat, easily accessible services and healthcare. Smart cities are also about the inhabitants’ surroundings – natural resources, which are increasingly more commonly referred to in the context of sustainable development
Intelligent cities are also about transportation, new models of traffic, decrease in CO2 emission and improvement of safety. The creation of intelligent cities should be regarded as an open project, in which individual elements should be able to work in synergy and re-scale depending on the citizens’ needs.

Technology gains more and more trust among societies. What percentage of respondents trusts the technology behind autonomous vehicles?
One of the phenomena taken into consideration by the Edelman Trust Barometer (which diagnoses the level of public trust) is technology. A research from 2018 indicates that although society trusts technology as such, the trust towards new solutions, such as blockchain, autonomous cars or AI, oscillates at about 50 percent.
What’s interesting, the widely understood technology isn’t actively building an image of trustworthiness. Such indicators like the method of data handling or the feeling of transparency of the technological companies’ actions have decreased in the latest research by 18 and 15 percentage points respectively.
50% of respondents in the Edelman Trust Barometer research declare trust towards autonomous vehicles. Only 64% of respondents believe that technology contributes to greater good of humankind.

What amount of budget is predicted to be devoted to spending related to the development of smart cities in 2022?
The International Guide to Smart City Spending, issued by the International Data Corporation, predicts that in 2022 the spending on technological investments in the area of a smart city will increase to 158 billion dollars.
The report announces an increase in spending primarily on intelligent transportation and data-based public safety. Behind it are positioned unnoticeable to most citizens administrative platforms and the development of IT systems, which significantly influence the general improvement of the quality of life in cities around the world.

How quickly does the world consumption of electrical energy increase?
According to the „Global trends to 2030 – Challenges and choices for Europe” report prepared by the ESPAS, the world consumption of electrical energy will increase by 1,7% per year. Two crucial trends are behind it: the increase in population and the rising economic growth.
Which sector has the largest potential influence on the global realization of the Sustainable Development Goals?
According to “The Relationship between Investor Materiality and the Sustainable Development Goals: A Methodological Framework” [G Betti, C. Consolandi, R. G. Eccles] research conducted in June 2018, a sector which has the largest potential influence on the realization of the 17 Goals of Sustainable Development is healthcare.
The model retained in the research analyses the importance of the private and public sectors in the realization of the goals, as well as the dependencies between those sectors. Creating arbitrary guidelines for all sectors and all goals is very difficult because of limited access to data coming from outside of companies. There’s a reason why we’re talking about medical services in the context of smart cities. The technological solutions that support professionals in caring for their patients’ health are an important part of the creation of a smart ecosystem, which has the improvement of human population’s quality of life in its core.
Which factor is defined as a key one for the development of sustainable medical services?
The answer to this question is far from obvious. During the last year’s BioData World conference in Basilea, Indra Joshi, a representative of National Healthcare Services in the UK, talked about the process of healthcare digitization.
It turned out that one of the biggest challenges was making the patients familiar with new possibilities and supporting them in their contact with technology. A change as simple as placing WiFi operating manuals in the waiting rooms actually brought the digital services within patients’ reach – also the elderly, who are often left aside by the digitization processes.
It’s a memorable lesson about the fact that in the process of intelligent cities development the human being should be put in the centre of innovation. The technology should serve humankind, not the other way around.
In a survey conducted by the EY amongst an international group of investors, a question was asked about the significance of non-financial reporting on business decisions. What percentage of respondents has stated that it is a very crucial factor to them?
The EY Investor ESG Survey has been conducted for a few years now and is a remarkable tool for defining changes that occur in the business on a global scale. In the past, the investors used to underscore the role of information regarding health and safety in the work environment. Today, despite that data remaining important, the weight of the investors’ interest has been moved towards such issues like the society’s expectations, the influence of new technologies, the changing demography, water and other resources accessibility, or climate change. The considered picture has definitely extended.
Sixty-three percent of investors surveyed in the last research (in 2017) indicated the company’s non-financial reporting as a key factor in making business investment decisions. A short-term prognosis based on financial data is becoming less important than the bigger picture that accommodates for business and personal strategies.
