How to integrate sustainability into your business strategy part 1 of 5
With this short series, I would like to share our insights and hopefully inspire you, or at least give you the feeling that the sometimes overwhelming subject of sustainability can be quite concrete if you know WHY you are doing it and HOW you could do it.
I’ll take a firm grip around “HOW”, try to simplify it and share examples on how we integrated sustainability into our business strategy and every aspect of our company. My hope is that this series may work as an example of how you can do it too. It is built on fragments from our 2020 Sustainability report, External link. and don’t worry, I will be generous with the links, if you would like to read more.
Our WHY is described more in the blog post 4 reasons to care – the consultancy industry and the climate External link, opens in new window..
First steps to integrate sustainability into your business
Strategy - Well, first of all, we regard sustainability as part of our reason to be. We are solution providers with the opportunity, as well as the responsibility to make a sustainable tomorrow. We are moving away from having a separate sustainability strategy to an ambitious and sustainable strategy integrating sustainability as a driver in all aspects of our business. And that’s the first step; to identify how to integrate climate and sustainability into your strategy External link, opens in new window..
Targets – Set clear targets! It’s not always as easy as it seems. To give you an example on how we’ve done it, we have targeted net zero emissions in our operations and hence to measure and reduce our own negative impact, we have committed to set science-based climate targets aligned with a net-zero future. (more about our footprint targets in part 2 and 3). We also have a target that 80% of all our business should deliver on one our more of the Sustainable development goals. (more about our handprint targets in part 4 and 5).
Tools - When you have a clear strategy and targets, you must find a way to deliver on those. You need to find a structured way that will help, guide and move the business towards your targets; this is the foundation for our impact model. We use the Exponential Roadmap Initiative’s 1.5°C Business Playbook External link, opens in new window. and its four pillars as the basis for how to disclose not only our climate impact but also our sustainability impact in general – learn more about our impact model External link, opens in new window.
Our impact model, the four-pillar disclosure model, illustrates our ambition, strategies, and progress and how we create:
- Tomorrow’s company
- Tomorrow’s value chain
- Tomorrow’s business
- Tomorrow’s society
The upcoming blogs will touch each of these areas in short as they are essential in how we integrated sustainability into our business strategy. If you have any input or questions, feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn External link, opens in new window.
Read the next blog in the series Integrate sustainability into your business strategy part 2. In part 2 I’ll share how we create tomorrow’s company.
